University students help local community prepare for the digital switchover

University of Central Lancashire BA(Hons) Public Relations students teamed up with local digital retailer, Dugdales to hold a digital inclusion day promoting the forthcoming digital switchover to the local community.

The drop-in event, held at the university on March 17^th 2009 was a great success. People of all ages from the Lancashire region came along to get their questions answered and find out how to fully prepare themselves for the switchover.

The switch to digital from analogue takes place in the Lancashire region on November 4^th 2009 and will affect your current television viewing.

Dugdales, based in Clitheroe, feel strongly that the residents of Lancashire need to be prepared for the upcoming digital switchover. The government run initiative has not been as successful in other regions, and Granada is the biggest region to switch to date.

Trained digital advisors were present at the event to discuss the digital switchover and were on hand to advise local residents of the options available to them. Representatives from Age Concern and Help Direct were also present. The project has gained the support of Digital UK, the not-for-profit organisation who are leading the process of digital TV switchover in the UK.

As a result of the event, InTag (a local community centre in the Preston region) have requested the students run a similar event at their local community centre.

Jonathan Dugdale of dugdales digital said, “I feel it is crucial that the residents of Lancashire are informed and prepared for the digital switchover. As a local independent family run business, we feel we are ideally placed to lead the community on this issue.”

The Switchover is coming!

The Digital Switchover is coming to the Granada region on November 4, 2009. This includes Preston, Manchester and Liverpool.

TV in the UK is going digital, this means that the analogue TV signal will be switched off and instead every television will receive a digital signal.

If you have Sky TV or Freeview you are already using a digital signal to watch your TV however if your aerial signal is poor it may need updating for you to be able to continue to receive the service after the switchover.

If you are currently watching terrestrial TV (channels 1-5 only) then you will need to prepare yourself.

The easiest way to do this is to get a Freeview box, but if you live in shared housing, especially flats it is likely you will need to ensure your landlord plans to update the aerial system so it is equipped to receive the new digital signal.

Your digital TV signal may also be poor if you live in a rural area, but the switchover will incorporate a boost to the digital signal.

Make sure you are ready by contacting Dugdales or you may be left without Hollyoaks or Eastenders when switchover comes.

If you buy any new equipment if it carries the digital tick it means it will continue to work after switchover. Registered digital installers also carry the digital tick which means they are trained and security checked to be able to install a new aerial should you need one
